phosphor audio tagging style guide ## title in most cases, the song's title is written exactly as the artist themself writes it. - exception 1: if a song has "feat. some other artist" in the title, this is removed, and the other artist is added to an "artist" tag. as of writing, notes as to who remixed a song are NOT included in this. - exception 2: if a song has "(bonus track)" in the title, this is removed. - exception to exception 2: if "bonus track" status is written in a deliberately silly way, or otherwise can be considered truly part of the song's name, it is kept. - example: | title: giltter (- bonus trcak -) | artist: DJ LĂ…NGBRALLA and | title: BIG BABS BONUS TRAK | artist: DJ LĂ…NGBRALLA ## artist the artist's name is written exactly as the artist themself writes it. there are no known exceptions at this time. if multiple artists are credited for the same song, each one gets an "artist" tag with their name in it. the order is determined as follows, rules that come first having a higher precedence: 1. if the album's primary artist is one of the artists of that song, they will be listed first. 2. if the song is a remix, the original artist is listed first. 3. artists are listed in alphabetical order. ## artistsort this tag is typically equivalent to the artist tag. - exception 1: if there are multiple artists as per the "artist" rules, only the first artist is listed here. - example: | title: This Broken Heart Has Too Many Pieces. [halc9bit REMIX] | artist: PROTODOME | artist: halc | artistsort: PROTODOME - exception 2: if the artist name is of the form "the something", albumartistsort is set to "something, the". ## album the album name is written exactly as the artist themself writes it. there are no known exceptions at this time. - note: we've considered removing designations like "EP" or similar from album titles, but we probably won't do that. ## albumartist typically, most or all of the songs on an album are credited to the same artist, and this artist's name is used. - exception 1: if the album is "split" between two or more artists (i.e. each of those artists contributed several songs to the album), each artist gets their own albumartist tag, listed in alphabetical order. - example: | album: People are feeling hungry | albumartist: Allison Fleischer | albumartist: Cheryl Stelli | albumartist: mothbeanie ## albumartistsort this tag is typically equivalent to the albumartist tag. - exception 1: if there are multiple album artists as per the "albumartist" rules, there is one albumartistsort tag. its contents are each albumartist's name listed in the same order as those tags, comma-separated. - example: | albumartistsort: Allison Fleischer, Cheryl Stelli, mothbeanie - exception 2: if the artist name is of the form "the something", albumartistsort is set to "something, the". ## date the year that the album was released. if an album has multiple versions, it's the date that the version we have was released. ## lyrics if the song is instrumental, there is no lyrics tag. if the artist has lyrics on their website or such, these are typically copied verbatim. - exception 1: if they made any typos that make it more difficult for us to sing along, we will correct them. - exception 2: if they used notes like "repeat chorus" or such, we'll copy-paste the actual lyrics that are supposed to be repeated. - exception 3: if the formatting is just, really bad in our opinion, we will rework it. the only album we've had to do this with is "mk iii" by steam powered giraffe--the lyrics on their bandcamp have a lot of weird line breaks. there's more to it, but this could probably be its own style guide tbh. ## tracknumber the numerical value of each track is kept as the artist intended, with no known exceptions at this time. this includes if the artist labeled the tracks starting with "0" (or another number that isn't "1".) the style of the numbers is not necessarily kept, though. if the artist uses 00-09 numbering, it gets changed to 0-9. the number of total tracks is not embedded in track metadata either.
